January 2013

Almost £13,500 was collected in the last year, which is again a respectable total especially as we are told that we are in a recession. People have been very considerate with their effort and contributions.

Rev Kevin Davies (Bethel) has taken the Chair following on from the long term served by Father Edward Dowding. We are enormously grateful to Father Dowding for his leadership and companionship, always bringing in a flavour of humour wherever possible. We wish Rev Kevin well in this role and ask for God’s blessing and help for him in this significant task.

CHRISTIAN AID is well supported in a series of Friday LENT LUNCHES held in Penarth throughout Lent. A lunch of Bread and cheese, sometimes with butter and sometimes not, but always with an array of homemade soups draws people from across the churches to All Saints Church Hall usually. but as refurbishment work is awaited there Trinity Church Hall was venue in 2011 and again in 2012. Not only do people find LUNCH but also good company of old and new friends.

2009 raised more money for Christian Aid than any previous year and a total of £2,561 was sent to CHRISTIAN AID. In addition to this several hundred pouunds were taken onthe TRAIDCRAFT / FAIRTRADE stall, further supporting those in need.
The House to House collection raised £5000 (a little down on previous years) and Tesco kindly gave us a 2 day “slot” in August when £655 were collected. Add to these sums a further £830 from our annual one day street collection in October and we have a substantial sum. Thanks be to all those administrators and field workers loyal to the cause.

Christian Aid Week
This starts on Sunday, 15th May. Dr. Evan Davies has taken on the responsibility for the House-to-House collection from Dr. David Kennedy and has checked that all church representatives were willing to represent their churches. He will contact The Salvation Army, Cosmeston Fellowship and Immanuel church to try and involve them in this event. Each year it gets more and more difficult to cover every street with envelopes that then need to be collected. But it is well worth doing so again please do encourage people to volunteer as collectors. Christian Aid Service – Father Dowding will plan this with other churches and speak to the Christian Aid office.
Father Edward Dowding will not be able to stand as Chairman at the AGM and the meeting agreed that the committee should choose his replacement. The constitution then requires the council to endorse the chairman of Christian Aid (and other local committees within Penarth CYTÛN). The meeting unanimously agreed that the secretary should write to congratulate Father Dowding on his installation as an honorary Canon of Llandaff Cathedral.
